What will resident artists receive?

Muse is a collaborative, common workspace located at 245 Avenue U. Regular membership costs $350/month. Residents in this program will receive free membership for one year which includes:

• Access to the studio to work on your art, Sunday-Friday 6am-1am (no Sabbath, graveyard shift, or Jewish holiday “Yom Tob” hours). The studio includes kitchen access, wifi, and dedicated storage for your supplies and works in progress.

• Access to all common studio supplies (we keep a basic kit of visual art supplies like canvas, paper, drafting tools, drawing and painting basic supplies, and air dry clay).

• Community and mentorship: our members are a close group of arts professionals at varying stages of artistic careers. A big benefit to our collaborative layout and spirit is the support, advice, and guidance that we offer each other.

• Free attendance at any studio event like monthly drink and draw evenings.

• Inclusion in our rotating onsite gallery display of finished works

• Members’ discount on any instructional classes or workshops we offer (15% less than public pricing).

In exchange, Residents will:

• Teach two public classes in any area of their expertise, at any time of their choosing during the yearlong residency, free for the public (you can set a participant limit).

• Dedicate a maximum of 2 hours per month to help support and grow our studio. This means either studio maintenance, event support staffing, graphic design, or social media management.

• Attend a minimum of two open studio sessions per month (Open studio days are held each Tuesday from 11am-2pm).

• Commit to a minimum of 8 hours per week of studio time. This can include the open studio sessions.

• Produce a minimum of 5 artworks related to a theme within the realm of Jewish identity, thought or values. These may be used in future exhibitions of the Residents' work. All other artworks Residents may want to dedicate their time to over the course of this year will be self-directed.

Some things to know:

• All studio members read & agree to adhere to our studio policies to begin their membership. Residents will be asked to do the same. They are a general guideline to how things operate at our studio, you can review them here. We urge you to do so before applying. The same applies for our insurance waiver. Reading these ahead of time will make sure our work environment is a good fit for you!

• An important value at our studio is the right to clean air and the peace of mind that comes from knowing we are working in with supplies that are not causing long-term illness. This is a seldom mentioned problem in art making and we are at the forefront of prioritizing the health of our artists. There is a healthy alternative to every medium; for example, oil paint solvents are not allowed in the space and we recommend diluting with walnut oil or using water soluble oils, all of which are available at the studio for you to experiment with. More about this is in our studio policies outline.

• Many of our studio members are in New Jersey for the summer months. This means that from mid June until mid September, the studio will feel mostly private! It also means that our Open Studio days will be held in New Jersey– Residents are welcome to attend but it’s not required to be at Open Studio sessions for these months.
